How are the pots made?
All the pots are made by Elke Lucas in her Noosa Studio. The process of making the ceramics is labour intensive and the pots have to go through quite a process as they are transformed from what is basically a fine mud into the beautiful finished pieces that you see displayed here.
The pots are hand thrown on a potter’s wheel and the flat ware is rolled out and shaped by hand. After throwing, the pots are turned on the wheel if the shape needs it – for example some of the bowls have the foot turned on the wheel once the pot has reached the leather hard stage. The flatware is also shaped and has the botanic impressions made while it is still quite soft. The pots that are decorated are then painted with the oxides with brushwork. Now bone-dry the pots are now ready for the first firing known as a bisque firing – this reaches temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius. After the kiln has cooled the pots are unpacked and dipped in the liquid glaze in the glazing process. They are now ready for the final firing known as the glaze firing where the pots reach a very high temperature of 1300 degrees Celsius. Now comes the high point in every potters making cycle – the opening of the glaze kiln, to hopefully be rewarded by a kiln full of glorious shiny pots.

Do the Ceramics need special care?
The pots are made for everyday use, however we do recommend taking extra care in handling and avoiding the following: sudden extreme temperature changes such as placing a cold pot into a hot oven, using the pots in a microwave oven, using sharp objects on the matt glaze (to prevent glaze scratching). In addition the König Gold range should be washed by hand.
